historical places cyprus, cyprus ancient sitesFoinikas Cyprus is an abandoned medieval village nestled in the Paphos district, steeped in history and mystery.

Once a stronghold of the Knights Templar, this village offers a unique glimpse into the island’s rich past.

In this Sanyctours Infothek entry, we delve into the origins, architectural remnants, and historical significance of Foinikas Cyprus, providing a comprehensive understanding of its enduring legacy.

Historical Overview Foinikas Cyprus

Foinikas Cyprus, also known as Phoinikas or Finikas, was established during the medieval period and became a significant site for the Knights Templar in the 12th century. Its strategic location, perched above the Xeropotamos River, made it an ideal fortress with natural defenses. The village was part of the „Commandaria della Finicha,“ a network of settlements under Templar administration.

After the dissolution of the Templar Order in 1313, the village came under the control of the Knights Hospitaller. Over the centuries, Foinikas thrived, particularly during the 14th to 16th centuries, when it became part of the royal casalia known for sugar plantations. The village also engaged in silk production, benefiting from the favorable climate of the Paphos region.

In the modern era, Foinikas Cyprus was predominantly inhabited by Turkish Cypriots until the events of 1974 led to its abandonment. Subsequent plans for dam construction in the area further contributed to its desolation.

Today, visitors to Foinikas Cyprus can explore the remnants of stone buildings, archways, and other structures that hint at its storied past. The village’s layout reflects its medieval origins, with narrow pathways and strategic positioning indicative of its defensive purpose. The surrounding landscape, including the nearby Asprokremmos Reservoir, adds to the site’s allure, offering picturesque views and a serene atmosphere.
