MUSAN – The Museum of Underwater Sculpture Ayia Napa

Just off the coast of Pernera Beach in Ayia Napa lies MUSAN, the Museum of Underwater Sculpture Ayia Napa, a pioneering underwater gallery that seamlessly blends art, environmental consciousness, and marine biodiversity.

Inaugurated on August 2, 2021, MUSAN is the brainchild of renowned British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor, known for his large-scale underwater installations that promote marine conservation.

This unique museum features 93 life-sized sculptures, including human figures, trees, and everyday scenes, all submerged at depths ranging from 8 to 10 meters.

A Dive into Art and Ecology

MUSAN is not just an artistic endeavor but also a significant ecological project. The sculptures are crafted from pH-neutral materials, designed to attract marine life and facilitate the growth of coral and other organisms. Over time, these installations evolve, becoming living reefs that contribute to the local marine ecosystem. The museum is situated within a Marine Protected Area, emphasizing its role in environmental preservation and education.

Exploring the Underwater Forest

Divers and snorkelers can navigate through this submerged forest, encountering sculptures that depict various aspects of human interaction with nature. Among the installations are representations of children playing, symbolizing the connection between future generations and the environment. The layout encourages visitors to reflect on themes such as climate change, habitat loss, and the importance of rewilding our oceans.

• Location: Approximately 200 meters off Pernera Beach, Ayia Napa, Cyprus.
• Depth: 8–10 meters, suitable for both snorkelers and certified divers.
• Access: Visitors can explore MUSAN through guided tours offered by local diving centers. The museum is open daily, providing ample opportunity for exploration.
